Turkey, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie, oh my! 2016 has been a crazy year (to say the least) and most people are looking forward to some quality time with family and friends. However, as Thanksgiving fast approaches and with the hustle of the holiday season just around the corner, it is easy to forget the need that persists in our community. Thanksgiving is a time of family, good food and grateful hearts with opportunities just outside our doors to make the holidays a little brighter for our neighbors in need. This is why we are proud to partner with Second Harvest in the 18th annual Tom’s Turkey Drive.
“Tom’s Turkey Drive is truly a community event,” said Second Harvest community relations manager Julie Humphreys. “Second Harvest is grateful to be part of an event that blesses so many families. . . It takes funding, hundreds of volunteer hours, and a lot of heart to provide 11,000 healthy meals for a family of four to vulnerable neighbors who just can’t make ends meet.” Tom’s Turkey Drive was started by Tom Sherry from KREM 2 TV in partnership with Rosauers Supermarkets. Tom’s Turkey Drive is the largest food drive in Eastern Washington, helping more than 11,000 families!
Did you know, over 4,000 gallons of milk are needed each week at organizations like Second Harvest? That is a lot of milk! Did you also know that many hunger agencies like Second Harvest, can’t keep up with that demand? The dairy food group is one of the most in-demand groups for food bank customers, yet they are not always able to bring it them home. That is why we, along with Darigold who is also a sponsor, deeply value being a part of this wonderful program. Tom’s Turkey Drive’s mission to feed hungry families in the Eastern Washington area hit close to home and we were more than willing to get involved in any way we could to make a lasting impact on the community. “We wanted to support community engagement programs that Rosauers feels very strongly about and Tom’s Turkey Drive is one of those,” said Jeff Steele, our Partnership Development Director.
This year we are happy to support half the cost for every box and include specially designed holiday placemats, to bring a little holiday cheer. The full box includes a half gallon of milk, a turkey, stuffing, rolls, canned vegetables, potatoes and a bag of apples. Darigold is providing approximately 12,000 half gallons of milk to be included in the drive. There will be a total of 11,000 boxes and each box will feed a family of four. The remaining 1,000 half gallons will be donated for general food bank needs. Darigold employees from the Spokane area, along with employees from our office and Dairy Farmers in the Spokane Valley area, volunteer to collect donations each year at Rosauers and help with the distribution on “Tom’s Turkey Tuesday,” November 22. “I would like to say a special thank you to the farming community that makes these meals possible. Dairy Farmers of Washington and Darigold providing fresh milk and a Washington potato farmer that delivers thousands of pounds of product makes Tom’s Turkey Drive meals healthier and better quality,” Laura Papetti of KREM 2 said. “Each partner plays an important role in the process.”
We hope you have the chance to join Dairy Farmers across the state in our fight against hunger. Please unite with our dairy family to spread joy this holiday season! Rosauers will be taking donations November 18-19 and distribution of the 11,000 prepared boxes will occur on Tom’s Turkey Tuesday, November 22, at Spokane Memorial Arena. “It’s really a humbling experience,” Steele said about his involvement with volunteering for Tom’s. “It’s been a driving theme of almost everything I do.”
