We celebrate dairy all year round because it’s our job, and because it’s our passion. But we always look forward to June when everyone else gets to celebrate with us for National Dairy Month. It’s a time to enjoy two scoops of ice cream instead of one, add a splash of creamer to our black coffee, sink our teeth into an extra cheesy pizza, and top all our berries with real whipped cream. It’s also a time to recognize the hard work and dedication Washington dairy farmers put in every single day to care for their cows and bring us farm fresh dairy products.
Another big part of National Dairy Month is our continued effort to end the fight against hunger. Thousands of children rely on school breakfast and lunch, and while school ends in the summer, hunger doesn’t. Milk and dairy foods are the #1 nutrient-rich foods requested by food box recipients.
So, Dairy Farmers of Washington and the Dairy Farmers of Oregon are going head-to-head to see who can bring in the most food and cash donations. We won it last year, collecting 7,751 pounds of food, and we need your help again this summer. Plus, a little goes a long way: just $10 is enough for your local food bank to provide 35 meals.
Last week, we kicked off with a Northwest Farmers Fighting Hunger event at the State Capitol. There are several other events throughout the month of June where you can volunteer or donate to help end hunger:
June 13: NW Farmers Fighting Hunger event (Ballard Fred Meyer)
June 20: NW Farmers Fighting Hunger event (Richland Fred Meyer)
June 27: NW Farmers Fighting Hunger event (Tumwater Fred Meyer)
There are also food collection bins at 110 Fred Meyer stores where cash donations can be made at check out registers. Cash and food donations benefit Feeding America affiliates Food Lifeline (Western Washington), 2nd Harvest (Eastern Washington), and the Oregon Food Bank.
We love June Dairy Month and will be celebrating all month long. Be sure to check out our Facebook Page for more June Dairy recipes and other local events.
