Not only is June the official kickoff to everyone’s favorite season, it is also National Dairy Month. So we want to extend a warm welcome to summer by celebrating dairy 30 days, 30 ways in the month of June. As the Dairy Farmers of Washington, it is our proud duty to share with you the very best of what our dairies have to offer, including recipes for healthy summer snacks (and sweet treats), local dairy-fests and fairs and a chance to win $10,000 just because it’s National Dairy Month.
June serves as a great reminder of why dairy is so important to our health. It’s recommended that people include 3 servings of low-fat or fat-free dairy in their diet every single day to stay healthy. One serving of dairy is: 1 cup (8 oz) of low-fat or fat-free milk, 1 cup (8 oz) low-fat or fat-free yogurt, 1.5 ounces of reduced-fat natural cheese, 2 ounces reduced-fat processed cheese or ⅓ cup reduced-fat shredded cheese.
From potassium to calcium, dairy products contain nine essential nutrients your body needs. Dairy may help to manage your weight, promote bone health and reduce your risk for high blood pressure and certain cancers. Dairy foods are nutrient-rich and have been called “a natural nutrient powerhouse.” Whether you’re looking for a better way to start your day, a quick snack to boost your energy or a delicious excuse to bring the family together at dinner time, we have you covered. You can dip it, blend it, slice it, shred it, top it, chug it, mix it, melt it, roll it or even scoop it. Check out 30 Days of Dairy for ideas on how to add dairy to your diet this month.
Dairy products are good for your body, and they’re good for your community, too. Dairy Farmers and their families are an important part of our state’s rich history and tradition. There are several dairy events going on throughout the state this month:
- June 7: Meet Your Local Farmer - Deer Park Dairy Farmer Stephanie Littrel will be at the Yoke’s Fresh Market in Argonne Village from 10:00am - 2:00pm, and the Inland Northwest Dairy Ambassador Alayna Loveall will be handing out chocolate milk and dairy coupons while supplies last (Spokane, WA)
- June 13-16: Berry Dairy Days (Burlington, WA)
- June 21-23: Meeker Days (Puyallup, WA)
- June 22-23: Bellevue Strawberry Festival (Bellevue, WA)
- June 28: Washington State Dairy Ambassador Coronation
There are also a handful of fun holidays in June that wouldn’t be possible without dairy: Chocolate Ice Cream Day or Ice Cream Soda Day, anyone? If that wasn’t enough, you can enter to win $10,000 in the name of dairy here.
We’re excited to celebrate summer and dairy with you. Be sure to check our Facebook page frequently for more recipes, events and fun facts as we make the most of dairy during National Dairy Month 2013!
